تشريح ثورة :

تربط هذه السلسلة من الأفلام المفاهيمية القصيرة التي تم تصويرها في مؤخراً في غرب إفريقيا بين الذاكرة التاريخية والجسم والتكنولوجيا. هذه الأفلام هي أشكال من البورتريه تلعب مع السرد والصورة والصوت لتتحدى كيف نروي قصصًا عن التغيّر السياسي والشخصي. تستكشف الأفلام الممارسات المتعلقة بالعنف والمقاومة والتكرار والذاكرة من تجارة الرقيق إلى الملاكمة إلى القرصنة على الكمبيوتر. سيكون هناك وقت للمناقشة بين كل فيلم قصير.

Anatomy of a Revolution :
This series of short conceptual films set in the near future in West Africa link historical memory to the body and to technology. These films are forms of portraiture that play with narration, image, and sound to challenge how we tell stories about political and personal transformation. The films explore practices that are about violence, resistance, repetition, and memory from slave trade to boxing to computer hacking. There will be time for discussion between each short film.

- Anatomy of a Revolution 7’ 21”
In West African politics fiction and non-fiction blur. (with Mohammed Ben Abdallah, Ebi Bright)

- Portrait of an Artist(s) 17’ 28”
A female world champion boxer and a portrait photography explore light and storytelling. (with Helen “Ironlady” Joseph, Nii Obodai)

- Focus: Boxing in Accra 14’ 19”
A day in the life of a young boxer in Accra. (with Emmanuel Mensah, Jeff Cobbah)

- High Tea 5’ 52” and 5’ 09”
Set in the near future. A man and a woman meet for tea on the extreme edge of Accra, Ghana, on a pier jutting into the Gulf of Guinea. They do not know where they are, who they are, or when they are. (with Rodney Quarcoo, Wanlov the Kubolor, Awusi Michell)

- Informationists 5’ 54”
This fictionalized search for fugitives explores the links between power, information technology, and the uncertainty of interpretation. (with Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll)


Jesse Weaver Shipley is an artist, ethnographer, and teacher based in New York City and at Dartmouth College. He works in multiple media—writing, film, photography, paint, sculpture, performance—to examine the links between aesthetics and power in a variety of contexts. His art practice takes a conceptualist approach to the intimate details of lived worlds. His work experiments with forms of portraiture and storytelling, focusing on mundane details that reveal grander tales of desire and trauma. He has spent many years moving between New York, Accra, and London to understand the performance of culture, power, and meaning and the changing and multiple links between personal and collective identities.
