يوم الثلاثاء على البحر (٨ دقائق، ٢٠١٩):

يقوم الحدّ بترسيم الداخل والخارج، ويفصل بينهما. إنه شيء ثنائيّ البُعد وثنائيّ الوجه، من حيث المفهوم؛ إلّا أنّه دون بدايةٍ أو نهايةٍ واضحَتَين لا يمكن للحدّ أن يُنتِج سوى امتدادٍ لا اتّساعًا. وباعتبار أنّه غالبًا ما تكون هناك سيادة مختلفَة على كلّ جانب، فإنّ مساحة الحدّ نفسها هي نوع من ”الأرض الحرام“. إنّها ’منطقة غموض‘ قد تتشارَكها عدّةُ قوى محدودة، لكن لا تحكمها أيّ قوّة واحدة مُنفرِدة. من خلال توظيف الحدّ كعدسة تحليليّة، يناقش كلٌّ من بيغلي ومولوي كيف يُمارَس الاستعمار ويُوظّف في الولايات المتّحدة وفلسطين. ومع تأرجحهما بين الحدود البحرية عند تيخوانا (المكسيك) وبيت لاهيا (فلسطين)، وكلَاهما نقطةٌ في سلسلة منفصلة، يُقارِب كلٌّ منهما بين الأنظِمة السياسيّة المتشابكة من الاستبعاد والعنف التي شكّلَت المشهدَين. من خلال وضع هاتَين الحالتَين المختلفَتَين في نقاشٍ نقديّ، يهدف بيغلي ومولوي إلى تحديد الطرق والأساليب التي يتم عبرها توظيف الحدود الاستعماريّة من أجل تنظيم أمور الحياة والموت.

شوريدِه مولوي: كاتبة وأكاديميّة، تدرِّس حاليًا في الجامعة الأمريكيّة بالقاهرة، مصر.
جوش بيغلي: مصمّم بيانات ومطوّر برامج وصانع أفلام يقيم في بروكلين، نيويوك، الولايات المتّحدة الأمريكيّة.

Tuesday by the sea (8 minutes, 2019):
The border demarcates the inside and outside. Conceptually two-dimensional and two-sided, but without a clear beginning and end, the border creates a length and not a width. Often with a distinct sovereign on each side, the space of the border itself is a kind of terra nullius. It is a 'zone of indistinction' that may be shared by multiple limited powers but is not ruled by any single power. Using the border as an analytical lens, Begley and Molavi discuss how the colonial is practiced and imposed in the United States and Palestine. Oscillating between the border at sea in Tijuana and Beit Lahiya, each a point in a separate continuum, they juxtapose the interlocking political systems of exclusion and violence that give shape to the two landscapes. By placing these distinct cases in critical conversation, Begley and Molavi aim to outline the ways in which colonial borders are today mobilized for the organization of life and death.


Shourideh C. Molavi is a writer and scholar, currently teaching at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.

Josh Begley is a data artist, app developer, and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York.
