Al-Bireh municipality is a financially independent non-governmental
organization. It operates according to legal provisions and is
supervised by the Ministry of Local Government. The municipality
is run by an elected municipal council whose members are elected
directly. In 1923, the British Mandate authorities decided to establish
a local council in Al-Bireh and in 1952, the Jordanian government
decided to convert Al-Bireh local council into a municipal council.
